Lidt farve / A splash of color

My youngest nephew turns 12 in a bit more than a month. While I was in the US, I got an idea about how his socks are going to be, and yesterday, I dyed the yarn. A sock blanket from Knitpicks got a thin, green line down the middle, and 2 shades of blue on either side.
It REALLY got a lot of color, and I did have trouble washing out the extra color.....

The rest of the dye ended in a pot with some other sock yarn (with cashmere. Delicious!) and got to sit there for a while.

This is how it looks today - almost dry. My nephew wants knee-high socks (deep sigh), so I made 2 blankets in the same way. I'm quite excited how it will look when knitted, and whether my idea turns out the way I thought - stripey in the 2 blue shades with a bit of green here and there.
Dyeing yarn is fun!

Tradition

It has become tradition that the socks for my sister's oldest are knit while on long car-rides with the family. It is my third time knitting long socks in the car! (And after meeting socks for the husband of my oldest niece, these socks look kind of small.....)
This time, he'll turn 18, so he should have something apart from ribbed socks.

I did the "Fly away" socks again. Just because this pattern is SO pretty and elastic, and actually fun to make. Of course, I made sure beforehand that he and his dad didn't mind having identical socks.
The yarn is kind of fun. It's Opal, but from German breeds, and it's a bit more "fuzzy" than usual Opal yarn, and it actually smells a bit like sheep! The socks are made with 2.5 mm needles, and they weigh 80 grams.
Mit mål om 26 par strømper i år, 1 strømpe pr. uge, går faktisk over al forventning.

It is the 17th pair of socks this year! For once, I even have model to show off the finished socks. The little sister of the recipient.
My goal of making 26 pairs of socks this year, one sock every week, is coming along better than expected. Actually, I'm ahead of my plan, and I still have 5 birthdays, 3 pairs of unspoiled baby's feet plus a pair of socks for me to come, so I'll finish in style.

Fisk! / Fish!

Find opskriften lige her.

My youngest nephew is crazy about fish right now. He's been on a fishing-summer camp, talks non-stop of fish and lines, and he (almost) only watches fishing-videos on youtube.
So today's pattern is - a fish! It's a Koi, one of the pretty Japanese giant carps, which are so incredibly peaceful. The pattern is right here.

Cindy's Northern Crafts

This past week, I've cheated a little bit on my blog, doing the posts beforehand. We went camping in Northern Michigan. Without my computer, which was smart considering the days of rain!
One day, we drove all the way to Petoskey, located 2 hours of driving from our camp. Petoskey has an amazing yarn shop, Cindy's Nothern Crafts.

We went up there, so that I could pick my birthday present, and I got all the time I wanted to look in the shop. Only deadline was that we were hungry and was going to eat afterwards....
There was so extremely much to look at, with yarn everywhere!
They also just had a shipment of sock yarn in the special "Petoskey Stone" colorway, but unfortunately, everything was pre-ordered, so I also had to do that if I wanted it. (I need to do that.....)

This ram's head was too cute, don't you think?

And here is my sister - shopping YARN! For me!
I picked a really good present, and I can't wait to open it on my birthday.....
Furthermore, I bought a little bit myself - a skin of sock yarn (the obvious choice) and another skein of the pretty "crazy" yarn from Stonehedge mill. They are all different, you know.....
Well. Tomorrow, I'll be going home. You are going to get a few days of US-posts anyway. I have a lot to show and tell!

Baby-ting / Babies stuff

Hopefully, there will be something finished here on my blog very soon. Until then, you'll have to listen to a bit more chit-chat. It's so much fun finding stuff for presents, especially funny baby's stuff! This little Starbucks-look-a-like sippy cup was SO pretty it needed to get home with me!

I also found this outfit very funny. But with so many leopard spots, my sister put a veto. The mother-to-be wasn't too impressed, either, and I guess it wasn't exactly pretty. I have to admit that. So it stayed in the shop.......

M in Michigan

Ann Arbor is a really nice city, actually, build around the university, which takes some space.
In the city center is the park with the big brass-M. It's very important NOT to step on it, if you want to pass your exam.
Flere gange. Måske er det et karrieremæssigt dumt træk......

Since I do believe that my examinations are well passed a long time ago, I stepped on it. Several times. Maybe it's very bad for my career.......

Stonehedge Fiber Mill "Crazy"

The most fun and different yarn to get in Michigan must be this one, called "Crazy".
It's made with ends of the same type of yarn, but different colors are put together in totally random color changes. I always buy some of this, if I get the chance!
This time, I even have plans.
These 4 skeins are meant to become a "Tomten" jacket for baby brother in Northern Jutland. The pattern is really pretty, and I think it would look nice in these colors. I've been wanting to knit it for a while.

These red skeins will become yet another "Baby Surprise Jacket". Apparently, it's a must for a new baby in my family. Much fun to knit, and even fast!
I just need to decide how to combine the mixed and striped yarn, but I do think it will turn out nice, any way it ends up. So exciting!

This skein was just SO pretty. I had to buy that one!
It's always exciting visiting the shop and seeing, which colors they have this time. Sometimes, they don't have a lot of skeins, sometimes they have plenty. Last year, I made 2 hats with this yarn, and they turned out so pretty! The idea of joining the ends is also very clever. Especially when it ends up so pretty!

I love going to Jo-Ann when visiting my sister, and every single time, it's SO difficult for me because of all the fun fabric they have.....
Every single time, I buy something, and although I succeeded in sewing up some of what I bought the past times, I still like knitting better!
This time, though, I should be able to make some very easy dresses for Miss T1 and T2. With the elastic band at the top, there is only one seam to do and a couple of straps to sew on, it should be fast. One of them loves Dr. McStuffins, the other one can cope with Peppa Pig, I hope.

They had more Dr. McStuffins fabric! I do think it would make a nice night gown. Furthermore, there was pretty fabric with notes and the most awesome fabric showing "Beauty and the Beast", which I imagine could become bedlinene for a baby!

S'mores

Camping and camp fires belong together. American camping sites have space for camp fires on all their tent-sites, which is genius! It's SO nice sitting around the tent in the evening, and it's great to cook on a fire.
You don't make the "snobrød" over here, but what they DO make are s'mores. Biscuits with roasted marshmallows and chocolate in between. Today's version is crochet. (And I still love the snobrød, but it's not very often I have the possibility to do it.....)

One of my goals for this vacation was to read a real book. An ENTIRE book, that is!
It was so fortunate that my sister came home with a pile of new books, and this one looked really, really good. If I want to read it, I'll have to finish it before I go back home, which is kind of efficient considering my goal....
It's very interesting reading about the incarceration of the top-nazis prior to the Nuremberg trials, and the psychiatrist who got to examine them, wasn't the usual kind. I'm looking forward to finishing it!

I've also been to a thrift  shop here in Ann Arbor. And I found old knitting magazines. Quite funny, actually, although the most fun were those from the 70's with knit crochet pants, and with identical, sewn pajamas for the entire family. The problem was the size of the magazines. I didn't want to take them home and ended up with magazines from the 80's onward. Those are also funny.

Ikke strømper / Not socks

The little dress is done. It's soooo pretty, now that it's washed and in the right shape!
The size turned out much better than I feared. I actually do think it will fit a 0-3 months old baby, just like the pattern said!
The pattern is from a Dale pattern book, the yarn is wollmeise. It's made on 2.5 mm needles, and even a little baby's dress feels like forever on 2.5 mm needles.

The dress is for my niece's little girl, expected in December. I used almost an entire skein of yarn in the color "Sanguinella". It weighs 135 grams.
It's so great having knit something this cute, and also something apart from socks and Bella cardigans! It actually feels so great, that I've found and bought a few patterns from "Knitting for Olive". Just because....
But it doesn't mean that I'm not almost halfway in the 17th pair of socks this year.....

Planer / Plans

Today, I'll spend the morning with this guy. Just him. Everybody else is doing other stuff, and I feel quite sure we'll have a nice time!
We'll start by visiting "Nick's House of Pancakes". Although the servings are always so big you'll end up feeling nauseous. Then we'll see afterwards. He would love to go to the movies, but the rest of the family also wants to see "Despicable Me 3", so I guess that won't be today. Maybe he can be convinced to spend an hour in Barnes & Noble? Maybe it will be "Zap Zone" like he talked about yesterday.
Tonight, it's just me and the kids. I'm going to force them to watch "Johnny English", and then I'll have to work on the socks I'm making for his big brother.

Afslapning / Relaxing

Tiden her går med afslapning.

Time passes with relaxation here. We do a little every day, and I admire my youngest nephew when he swims, when he plays computer-games and when he is sorting his Pokémon cards. (Right now, he is sleeping on a mattress beside my bed.) He is so old by now, that I'm not allowed to upload his photos on the internet without permission. Wow!
This Tuesday, we went to the Huron River, "tubing" down the little waterfalls. It was a very, very slow thing, since I got "stuck" all the time, outside the current. But a lot of fun! I also got some serious blue spots from paddling, but that's how it goes.

Yesterday, we went to the river again, and had lunch looking at this view. So beautiful!
Our entertainment was the ever hungry dog trying to steal the bread from the 11 year old, but unfortunately without success.
I also knitted a little bit. The dress is really showing progress, and is turning out really pretty, although it lasted forEVER knitting the skirt. At least twice the amount of time expected!
Fortunately, the size looks very good, and it doesn't look as big as I was afraid.
I started some socks, and the baby blanket grew a little.

And then I met a groundhog! This little guy wasn't the least scared (very unusual), but sat around nicely for a few photos. Isn't he just cute?

15 år / 15 years

My niece turned 15 just 2 days before I arrived. When her socks were finished next morning, she put them on immediately. In spite of the summer heat!
The yarn is Zauberball in some hand-dyed edition, and we both like the effect of this skein. Although it's only ribbed socks.

This time, I cast on 72 stitches, making them a bit wider. They are made on 2.5 mm needles and weighs a total of 80 grams.
She staid in the socks with shoes for 4-5 hours, before her feet needed air, but then she slept wearing the socks at night. As is her tradition with new birthday socks!

I got to see her gift from her parents. A flying lesson! Since it's the US, it didn't cost a fortune, and the girl was overjoyed! She wants to be a pilot, and this didn't do anything to take away her dream, getting this ride....
The best thing? I still got 2 weeks left over here!

Murmeldyr / Groundhog

I haven't met one myself, but my sister usually sees one on her way back from work. Same place, same time. EVERY day. (It would be interesting doing a psychology test on that groundhog. Why is it crossing the street at the same time every day? Is it trying to solve a murder?)
Well. Anyway. You can make it as a coaster for a cup. Cute, right?

Ann Arbor

It didn't make me too sad leaving the weather in Denmark yesterday. Which is all that I need to say about the Danish summer this year!
The flight was very peaceful and uneventful. The biggest problems was the I didn't manage to finish the socks entirely, and then that I had an apple in my bag, which I hadn't managed to eat. THAT's not allowed! Fortunately, I got through by apologizing very sincerely.....

And then I arrived! Unloaded all the candy, the liver paté and shredded ham (because THAT was allowed to bring!), found my shorts and tried staying awake for a reasonable time. We cheered in cherry wine from Michigan, had licorice boats and were watched closely by Bailey, who is as cute as ever. This time, though, he DIDN'T growl at me when I came. That's progress!
Right now, it's morning. The rest of the family is sleeping a bit more, and I'd better finish the socks.

But I just have to show you that the cardigans arrived in Northern Jutland. The size is just right, and don't they look cute, little miss T2 and her baby brother?

Ready, steady - GO!

FINALLY, my vacation started! At work, people started coming back from their vacation, school is appearing in the horizon again, and since we had a sad summer, weather-wise, it has been some very long weeks, these past 3 weeks of work.
But yesterday, I waved bye-bye to Sweden and went home. After sleeping far too little last night (it's impossible falling asleep again when you know you'll be travelling, although it's too early!) I sit here with my coffee. Packed and ready.

The candy is also packed. This time, with a bit more chocolate. A nice mix of candy, but with a lot of licorice.
It will be SO nice sitting on the plane - it's always so relaxing! Time to watch movies and knit at the same time, with nothing else to do. But as always, it feels surreal to be able to fly almost halfway around the globe in less than 12 hours. And even more surreal waking up at 4 a.m., knowing that they hardly went to bed over there. I need to sleep a bit on my second plane, because otherwise I'll just fall over and land in a bed when getting there.....

Nogle gange trænger man / Sometimes you just need it

I don't know how all of you out there feel about work. Most of the time, I'm really, really happy with mine, but this last week before my vacation, has been kind of tough.
We had a lot of very sick patients, and they always get inside my heart in some way. EVERY time. I can get FURIOUS, if my patients are not treated as they should be, but most of the time, it works out as planned.
This week has been really challenging, colleague-wise. Not all pediatricians behave the same way! Especially yesterday, I was really fed up. Unfortunately, I was so tired, that I never followed my plan. What I needed, was a nice murder, and we all know how Barnaby always delivers! It feels like half the village get killed every time, and it's not so nerve-wrecking that I don't dare to watch.
Maybe I should watch an episode tonight instead? After I packed my suitcases, you know. I'm really, really excited to get away!
Do any of you out there feel the same? Do you sometimes need a quick murder to cheer up life?

Tvungen ferie / Forced vacation

My budgies, who usually stay at home when I leave, had to go somewhere to be taken care of, since my old neighbor would like to go and see her new grand-baby instead of taking care of birds. Her dog just died, so right now she is not forced to stay at home, which is really nice for her!
In order to be moved, the birds had to get into the smaller cage that I can bring. THAT was no fun!
I had to catch them and they are certainly not used to being treated like that, or to stay in the small cage, but it still went well.

They went on a bus trip, and I don't know what they thought about that. They talked quite a lot.
My sister was sure they feared to die. I really hoped they tried cheering up each other. One way or the other, they survived!

So now they are at my brother's place. His dog needed to take a closer look on these strange animals, but after staring long and hard, he rather wanted to do something else.
So even though this photo looks kind of scary, I do think it will work out well. It's nice to know that they are in good company!
