TO gange!
Men mest nuttede.
The socks are finished, and I stayed awake.... These socks are for my oldest nephew, turning 24 years in a few weeks. Actually, he is the reason I ever started knitting socks. TWICE!
First, he was born. Oh, so tiny and cute! I made tiny little socks on 2 needles and very carefully sewed them together afterwards. They were so cute! And also a bit practical, since I made a string to tie them round the ancle. But mostly they were cute. And tiny.
When he was around 3-4 years old, his mother gave me 3 skeins of sock-yarn in purple, red and off-white and asked if I would make him some socks? And so I learned the double-pointed needle method. Turned the heel and all. The first 2 pairs ever (for him) were not the prettiest in the world, but I learned!
And then these socks. The first socks for him in 20 years..... I guess he deserves a pair in adult size!
The yarn is - wollmeise, having been stashed for very long. The color is called WD Golden Pear, and the socks took 125 grams, making my total wollmeise-knitting 1865 grams so far.
The pattern is taken from here, and then a bit further. I used my standard heel and toe.
I didn't really like the color when I had the yarn. Made me think of - - - - - diarrhea? But you might as well think caramel or a cold beer? Anyway, they look way nicer than I ever thought they would when opening the bag....

Sovende eller vågen? / Asleep or awake?
I just returned home from my fourth evening/night shift in a fortnight. It was a quiet night, and my last week of vacation starts now. My dilemma is: should I sleep for an hour and wake up rested, knowing that I propably won't be alle to sleep tonight, or should I stay awake, enjoy the sunshine and sleep well tonight?
I think I'll take the second option. Including cherries and a sock that's almost done. Spiced up by the radio.
Happy sunny Saturday to all of you!

Kingdom keepers
Simpelthen genial!) og "Alice in Wonderland".
It's a small world" igen!
P.S. Børnene var iøvrigt noget så ligeglade. De spillede Nintendo. Men min søster og jeg nød historien!
On the just finished roadtrip, my sister found some cd's with books read aloud. We heard "The hobbit" and "Alice in Wonderland". Then we heard the beginning of something no-one liked, but then came the big surprise. The first book of the "Kingdom Keepers" series, "Disney after dark".
I never heard about those books, but refused to go home before we heard the full story (plenty of miles for that!). It's a totally far out tale of "Disneyworld" in Orlando, where the Disney villains try to take over the parks. Including some extreme rides in Magic Kingdom with the attractions coming alive.
As a hardcore Disneyland lover, I hardly unpacked my suitcase before all the books were ordered on amazon.... Now I just have to finish reading about the secrets of Shakespeare, and them I'm off to adventureland. I can't wait to try "It's a small world" again - it won't ever be the same!
P.S. The children couldn't care less. They played Nintendo. But my sister and I enjoyed the story!

Tid til grønt / Time for something green
In a very short while I'm going to a wedding. Wearing my Chinese dress AND this shawl. It's going to be so pretty! The first pattern is completely done. Number 2 pattern, the pretty, pretty "frost flowers" is coming along nicely as well. At first, I planned to do another repeat of all 31 rows, but considering the pattern on knit- AND purl-rows, plenty of work, less time for the couch and just 9 days left before the wedding, I had to dig up my sense of reality, blow the dust away and face the fact that I really need to continue to the third pattern very soon, if the shawl is going to be ready.
Does any of you remember if I ever said anything negative about the "nupps"? I can't imagine.... They are so much fun to make, if I remember correctly! (And there will be plenty....)
Maybe I should consider using this method, recommended by Pernille. Looks really smart, actually.

Baby-jeans
The teeny-tiny jeans were finished last night, when I spent the evening on my couch, enjoying myself. Watching TV! (I liked it!)
They are made in HP "Jeans", a 100% cotton yarn that is denim-colored, meaning it's colored the same way as jeans, making it fade a little over time (and making the yarn ooze color! My fingers were completely blue from knitting....). I made them with leftover yarn from another pair of jeans, and made the smallest size to make sure I had enough. I used a total of 75 grams.
They are really tiny! Last time I made them in the smallest size (for the newborn cousin of my sisters kids), I was almost embarrassed to give them as a gift, because how would a baby fit in them? I was told they fit very nicely, so that's why I'm trying again. And, as you see, my good (very) old teddybear "Ulla" looks good in them, so I hope it will work out!
Otherwise I'll just have to knit another pair in a larger size. It's a fact that these jeans are HOT! Every pair I made were welcomed and I dare say that you will become extremely popular if you make a pair for a small one you know. The pattern is this one, and they don't take long to finish.

Lidt farver / A splash of colors
Find dem her, inden de finder dig!
I can't stand all the rain! I'm going crazy! I need colors!
Like - ehm - rainbow penguins.... (What???)
Well, they are cute, don't you think?
You can find them here, but hurry, before they find YOU!

Tattoo baby
Last night I went to some of my friends celebration of their 12.5 years of marriage and met this baby with a (fake) tattoo.
I'm very impressed. Apparently babies from the Western part of Jutland know the latest, hippest trends, 'cause I haven't met this phenomenon in Copenhagen yet!

Noget andet / Something else
I knitted something else while on vacation. Didn't take long finished the knitted part of these tiny baby-pants, and I just need to sew a little bit.
As I remember from the other knitted jeans, the sewing is done in no time. I just need to start! The baby is having them on Tuesday, and I'll have it done by then, I guess....
The pattern is this one, and it's a definite success!

Zig Zag
I had plenty of time for knitting while on vacation in the car! It was good, because otherwise my zig-zag top wouldn't have finished yet.... Due to all the zig-zag's, each round had lots and lots of stitches, and the last stripes needed some miles......
Fortunately I kept knitting, and the top has a great length.
The pattern is the good, old "zig zag top" by Marianne Isager. Very good and fun model, knitted top-down without any need for sewing. The neckline sorts of makes itself, and the up-and-down border at the bottom is just great. I made size L and even added a bit of A-line. Right after it was finished, it looked big, but that didn't stop me from wearing it straight off the needles!
After a wash the fabric is a little tighter and after hanging on a coat-hanger for a few hours it's just perfect! Just the right length and not too big. It's in cotton and a little thick, but the weather doesn't call for thin tops. I used 435 grams of G-B Wolle Batik in total. It's identical to Katia Bombay.
I really like this yarn with changing colors and (fortunately) I have enough yarn for another summer-top. Maybe next year?

Hjemme / At home
Today is my day off. I'm loving it! After some weeks with a maximum of 2-3 awake hours in a row at home it's wonderful to have a little time in my home, and there is plenty to do. Bird cages, dust, ironing, articles to read, a hairdresser to visit, things to tidy up....
Oh yes - and the new notes needing some wrapping in adhesive plastic! Can't wait until the end of this year, when we will sing these 3. Bach's magnificat is so pretty, and Händel is always wonderful to sing.
This morning I woke up after sleeping more than 4 hours straight for the first time in some days. Jetlag AND night-work makes my sleep-pattern go crazy. Possibly because I'm getting older..... Don't know what's the reason, but it was definitely wonderful to sleep and wake up feeling rested! Unfortunately also very relaxed. Not sure I can come around doing great stuff today! Ought to take a run today, for the first time in almost a year. Just the thought of it reminds me that I'll probably get a death-wish halfway through......
And the knitting? Of course! When I'm reading articles, I have to knit in order not to stop!

Roadtrip, long version
Last weeks vacation had been planned for a long time. My sister & co. were going on a roadtrip, and the timing was perfect for me to join, which I was really excited about! I've never been on a roadtrip before, and since I have neither drivers license, nor car, I guess I'm not going on one again very soon, if ever.....
After arriving, I slept for one last night in their house, and we started the next morning by going to Yosemite. A "short" ride of just 4 hours (including stops at restrooms and places to eat).
Yosemite was really impressive, and in my camera I have at least 30 photos of "Half Dome", but I'll show you just this one. With my niece. She is very decorative, don't you think?
Yosemite is about the size of Zealand, and that is pretty big for a Dane! It took a while driving through it, including all the mountainsides and hairpin-turns, all making you drive very slowly.
The nature is so beautiful, it seems super-natural, and it felt like having your picture taken in front of some un-realistic picture on a wall. So many tall mountains and waterfalls (yes - of course I photographed all of them!) - the next one prettier than the one you just saw.
Denne klippe påstod mindste-nevøen at han da gerne ville klatre på! (Gæt selv, om han fik lov!)
My youngest nephew would love to climb this rock! (Guess for yourself, if his parents let him do it!)
After 2 days in Yosemite, we had a loooooong drive to Death Valley, where we slept overnight. Fortunately enough, we were delayed and didn't arrive until after sunset. Fortunately, since the temperature then was "only" around 30 degrees Celsius.
Very early the next morning, we left before the temperature reached the 40-50 degrees Celsius, and through the car window you got the idea why it's called "Death Valley". Not many signs of life! (The hotel was in a green area, though.)
Very weird to think that I've been in the lowest place on earth. Didn't feel very different.....
In the middle of nowhere was a tiny city, and in the city was - - - - - an opera house!
Sandelig en mærkelig by!
We then went to Las Vegas, which was a very short ride, and stayed there overnight. What a weird city!
Very, very warm during the day, and filled with bling at night (and the photos are correct. We didn't see one single cloud in the sky!) - and then all the casinos!
You might guess that it was my first time there! The hotel was great and we had some wonderful steaks at Cesars palace. Everything on "The Strip" were very interesting and funny and big, but I'm somehow very satisfied I had the "family version" of Las Vegas.
Derefter kørte vi til Bryce Canyon. Helt utroligt smukt!
Then we went to Bryce Canyon. So extremely beautiful! You can take a walk among all the cliffs, and we spent a few hours doing that.... It was just before sunset, and the colors were amazing! The nature is completely different from Yosemite and just fantastic.
The weird thing was, that while Yosemite is so gigantic and you ride your car forever inside the national park, the entrance to Bryce Canoyn was just through a pine wood. A bit boring, actually, until you reached the canyon!
We slept in a tiny little village called "Tropic". It held 3 motels, a restaurant and a super market. Along the same road. But just because your city is small, you can still have a Main St. and a Center St., right?
The final day we drove to Salt Lake City and I was dropped off at the airport. From there I went to San Francisco and slept in a hotel very close to the airport, where you can see all the airplanes flying very low over the water before they lang. Impressive sight! It was the perfect end of the second third of my summer vacation, and my last trip to visit family in San Francisco. I guess I have done my very best to take advantage of my sister staying there......
My final week of summer vacation will be in a few weeks, and the most crazy thing planned is going to a wedding in Northern Jutland. I'm looking forward to that!

Farver / Crayons
Today it's about colors. Right now nature is very colorful, although Copenhagen seemed very grey and wet yesterday!
The colors that inspired this scarf is different though, taken straight from your coloring book kit.
But what if you have more than one favorite color or more yarn and you think that one scarf is not enough?
Well - the next pattern is crocheted, but I guess you might just as well knit a few scarfs and sew them together, and in no time you'll be the proud maker of a little blanket!
The crochet blanket can be found here (you have to scroll down a bit)

Roadtrip 2012 - short version
Der var fletninger.
There were braids.
Og vandfald.
And waterfalls.
Smukke udsigter.
Pretty views.
Og KÆMPEstore sten!
And GIANT rocks!
Someone didn't like being disturbed by people, but lived with the paprazzi.
Der var lange, lige veje! (Perfekt til at strikke uden at blive køresyg)
There were long, straight roads! (Perfect for knitting without having to worry about motion sickness)
Jeg mødte Mario! Og Luigi!
I met Mario! And Luigi!
Der var helt utroligt smuk natur.
There were amazingly pretty nature.
Som gav knap så smukke fødder......
That gave you less pretty feet.......

Sidste dag / Last day
Today is the last day of a wonderful vacation. Tonight I'll fly to San Francisco and sleep alone - without a kid to steal the blankets! - and tomorrow I'll fly back home and start working again.
Next time I'll see them will be in Copenhagen airport in one and a half month. Not too long!

Sjal / Shawl
I've knitted a lot on my shawl. It's turning out really good! Super soft and pretty, so I have a hard time remembering that I nede to knit instead of just petting it and enjoy how soft it is.....
There is mand more hours of knitting in this shawl, and I Think it's going to be great.

Endda inden vask.
Another pair of plain ribbed socks are finished. This time in a green-grey guinea-pig color from wollmeise.
I guess you share this experience - some colors just feel softer than others, and these socks are really nice and soft! Even before washing them.
The color is very pretty and variegated. It changes depending on the light, and even though is among the "boring" colors on my personal scale, I still like it a lot!
The socks took 130 grams, and so I knitted 1740 grams of wollmeise this year. (If I just knit a few more socks quickly, I can buy yarn again soon!)

Advarsel / Warning
I'm attending a congress. This morning I got up too late for breakfast. Instead I had cookies during the break. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, take my advice and forget the cookies. I felt nauseated....

Hurra! / Hooray!
MEGET dejligt!
I dag i toget blev strømperne her færdige.
Eneste minus? Jeg gad godt se ham i ansigtet.....
Of all hopeless photos on this blog, this specific photo must take the price as the most useless sock-picture. Ever. The first days of the busy weeks came with a course in Århus. Very nice, as always! Not with a lot of time for knitting, since we were "playing with dolls", trying to resuscitate them.
My article finished last night and was submitted. Wonderful!
Today in the train, going home, these socks were finished. Wollmeise, a total of 155 grams in a guinea-pig, black-brown color. Rather boring color that is very pretty, even if I'm not a huge fan. In total it brings me to 1610 grams of wollmeise so far this year.
The socks ended up becoming a gift for the professor at Hvidovre. Just because I borrowed his book and forgot to give it back, only finding it after 3 months.... Because we had been talking about knitted socks in the morning, when I sat knitting, staying awake, and because I know that he will be ever so happy with them. Especially since the color is not too noisy.
So I knitted the last few stitches (standing) in the train to Copenhagen, and then I gave the socks and the book to a colleague still working at Hvidovre, who will give the book and the socks to the professor tomorrow. Only bad thing? I won't be there to see his face.....
