Problem og løsning / Problem and solution
Hurra for Ravelry! (Og for Pia)
I brought some dark green garn and a crochet hook when going to USA. Hoping that the long, dark, early jetlag-morning-hours would be spent making lots of squares for the blanket (and reading lots of long articles. After 3 days I slept excellent, thank you!)
I did crochet some, and now I'm looking forward to the great joy of sewing them all on the blanket. (Heavy sigh)
Unfortunately I discovered, that I really wont have enough yarn for the blanket as I want it. So I put out a search on Ravelry, and would you think: Pia has some yarn in the same color, bought at the same time, and is willing to share some with me! (And I'll be delighted in sharing some yummy, American yarn with her.....)
So now I really have to get crocheting - otherwise she'll (very) soon think that I've fallen asleep over (under) this blanket and forgot everything.
Hoorray for Ravelry! (And for Pia)

Til bilen / For the car
It had to come some day, right? Something for the car!
Well, who's not in need for something knitted in the car?
My friends - there is a giant world out there of cars without anything knitted. Not good at all!
So we start with a very quick, easy thing. Fuzzy dices for the front window!
Well, doesn't that just bring a tear to your eye......

Anderledes, men meget smukke mønstre!
(Of course) I brougt home some books from USA. Some were ordered before I came, others came as surprises.
First this great socks book with Japanese patterns. I had seen it on a library in Denmark, and when I happened to find it, I really wanted it. Different, but very pretty patterns!
This book is a must-have! Already the book with flowers and fruit is in the house, and now I have the potential of making birds, butterflies and strange plants for decorations......

Ekstremt alternativ, men sjov!
Knitpicks had 40% off all knitting-books, and I guess this would lead to some very different Christmas presents? Extremely different, but very funny!
What to say?

Denne bog var totalt en overraskelse. Fødselsdagsgaven fra søsteren + familien. Aldrig har jeg set noget lignende!
This book was a total surprise. Birthday present from my sister and her family. I never saw anything like it!

The worst thing is that my niece immediately declared how she can't live without the sushi-scarf! My sister, on the other hand, seems to be convinced that the mixed-salad scarf would be perfect for her winter-coat.

Art yarns
I went to another yarn-shop. A day alone in downtown San Francisco, where I "happened to" mark some yarn-shops on the map (just in case....) The first one didn't sell yarn any more, but the second was visible down the street.
Men hvilket garn! (Hva'be'har!)
P.S. - nej, jeg købte ingenting. Overhovedet!
What a shop! Totally different from any other shop I've seen. Filled with tables with samples, and the yarn in baskets under the tables.
And what yarn! Amazing combinations sold with a pr. yard price! (What do you think!)
I've never seen anything like it.... Not more expensive compared to other luxury-yarns, but pricey enough. Especially when you tried calculating the price (they were kind enough to tell the price for a sweater or a scarf...)
If you ever go to San Francisco, try this shop. Quite close to Union Square, and a experience like nothing else!
P.S. - no, I didn't buy anything. At all!

2 bundter / 2 skeins
I've used almost 2 skeins of yarn for my sweater. Approximately halfways. It's still just great!
The pattern is extremely well written. For instance, there are some bust-darts in front, to make it fit better. It's also fitted around the waist, although I must admit mine will become less fitted...
Now I just need to knit a lot on the flight home!

Jelly Belly Beans
On Monday, I went with my family to the Jelly Belly Beans factory close to San Francisco. What an experience! Very funny and a perfect place for tourists. They have free tours around the factory every 15 minutes. And a long line!
Jelly Belly Beans are useful for many things, apart from being eaten. You can make pictures, like this portrait of John Wayne. We learned that former president Ronald Reagan was crazy with Jelly Beans and had a turbulence-secured bowl of beans in Airforce One.
And then there's a store.... Paradise for people like me, loving stuff like that. So now I'm the happy owner of Jelly Belly earphones, earrings and a lot of eatable beans. Including a giant bag of "Belly flops"....

Mit strikketøj / My current project
I finished my travel-project rather quick, but luckily another project was planned.
I intended starting the shawl for my oldest niece, but the yarn-shop didn't have enough yarn right now. I didn't want to bring the math-sweater for my nephew - I need to swatch and think far to much. The Icelandic sweater for the final niece wasn't really planned yet, pattern-wise, and the yarn takes up so much space..... So I decided on something for me!
I had ordered real luxury in an internet-shop. Madelinetosh Pashmina from Eat.Sleep.Knit. Enough for a sweater for me, and I started on Celia (Ravelry-link). I hope it turns out good. The yarn is soooo soft and smooth and a little thick and sooooo pretty (Tart)......... I've done almost 25%, but it's not growing fast. Every-time I'll sit down, there is a child nearby. (But I'm knitting in the car. The kids are all strapped down there!)

Lugter her ikke lidt af fisk? / Something fishy going on
In the yarn-shop I just visited, they had a lot of these. Knitted for math students in the area, already around 50 fish hats were hanging around the shop.
They looked good! So maybe I shared this link before, but then I'll repeat myself. Do you know anyone in need of warm ears for the winter, then try making this little fish-beauty!

Surprise!
I skal da lige se lidt fra min usædvanlige dag i går. Okay.
You have to see some pictures from my unusual day yesterday. Well. Okay - visiting a yarn-store is not unusual! The unusual part was that my sister suggested it. I had carefully not planned any yarn-store-cruises, since I came to visit the family, and by the way had ordered the most delicious yarn on the internet.
But then we willfully came by "k2tog", which is a lovely shop. And large, too!
The more unusual thing was that we were on the way to a pedicure and manicure. So here I am with a strangers fingers and toes, all shiny. I succeeded in breaking 4 nails out of 5 on my right hand before the polish was dry, but never mind. I have to remove it before starting work again, so I'll live with the irregularities.
Til kaffen skulle vi have kage. For at fejre nevøens kommende fødselsdag - troede jeg!
We had cake for the afternoon-coffee. To celebrate my nephews birthday, which is coming up - I thought! The look of the cake was a deep secret.....
And suddenly I knew why! I was the one celebrated in advance with a great, American cake! It was really good, even though all the frosting gave a full stomach.
All the 3 kids had kept it secret, even my youngest nephew, who generally can't keep quiet about anything, so it was a gigantic surprise, and I was so very deeply happy!
(I also had a present. A book of crocheted, funny and unusual scarfs)

Jo-Ann
The kids were going to the dentist (you really need a lot of tests before being allowed to start school over here), and then I got to spend some time alone in a GIANT crafts store.
I wasn't unhappy. Choosing between lovely stuff for creative activities and the dentist? Hmmm. Not too difficult.
Jo-Ann has everything for crafts. The most impressive part was for sewing. For instance all the pretty buttons and ribbons. Enough to keep me occupied for some time!
Part of the fabrics section. A lot for patchwork. Really pretty, and most of it was even on sale! I bought some, and now I really must get around sewing something from all the fabrics I have at home! The funniest fabric I bought in there, was some Halloween-stuff with beautiful, orange pumpkins. No idea, what I will use it for, but it is pretty and fun.
Garn havde de også. Alverdens forskellige former for - - - - - acrylgarn.
They had yarn too. Al different kinds of - - - - - - - - acrylics. No thank you, acrylics is not on any favorite-lists of mine! Fortunately, I know how to get hold of yarn in other places!
The large, one-pound skeins were impressive, though.

Glade dage / Joyful days
It is ever so nice seeing the family again. When I arrived at 1 a.m., my niece woke up and had tea with us adults, and then the nice time continued ever since. It is my first time in San Francisco, and it is a very different way of visiting USA, since I'm visiting someone and can get around in a car. Already I saw some different things.
First a pet-cow in a little farm, open for kids. As you can see, even cows are experts in begging, even if they are only allowed cellery and lettuce.
We looked at pretty cakes in "Safeway", and actually I'm going to taste a cake like this, because we will celebrate my sister's eldest birthday while I'm here, even though it's not really until after I left......
The streets are really crazy and extremely steep. But still ordinary streets with houses and schools and stuff. Man, Copenhagen is a flat place!
I've even seen a lot of people on bicycle over here. Not afraid of dying, I guess, since the roads are narrow. I bet they also get sore legs!
Her er smukke, smukke udsigter oppe i bjergene.
I've seen some very pretty views in the mountains. Imagine living 30 minutes car-ride from this!
And the wollmeise-socks for my nephew had the ultimative test. Almost 3 miles of walk on dusty forest paths, up and down the side of a mountain. If they survive this, they are really hard to kill.... (And yes, he did it because he likes them. Not out of hate.)

I'm in San Francisco now, visiting my sister and her family, leaving my home and birds in the care of my (sharp-eyed) neighbor.
On the way here, of course I needed a knitting project for all the flying, and the little cousin of my niece wanted a horse-dress too (said her mother), which would be great to make on the way to my niece, so I cast on in Copenhagen airport, knitted a lot on the way to Toronto. Knitted a little in Toronto and even less on the second plane. Then there was nothing left to knit!
Next morning, when I woke up (very early), I sewed in the ends and did a crochet border round the sleave holes, - AND THEN IT WAS FINISHED! In just 36 hours!
It is a bit different from the dress of my niece. Different horses (I hoped for a smaller yoke, but didn't quite succeed), not very wide and shorter. The little cousin is a year and I half, and I think it'll fit. My youngest nephew could use it as a vest (in 2 seconds, before he ribbed it off. Didn't want to wear a dress).
I used around 150 grams of Hjerte Roma (cotton and acrylics) but need to weigh it at home. It's totally improvised, and besides the very broad yoke (probably sticking out over the shoulders), I'm very happy!

Looks good now, doesn't it? I'm more than halfway, and now, with fall approaching, it's just wonderful to have the warm blanket over my legs while working on it....
The new blanket issue is a worry about wether I will have enough of the dark green yarn? I have my doubts, but we'll see. If it's a problem, I'm sure I can put up a search on the internet, and get some help.
The final part of the blanket is also the easiest part. A little white, but mostly dark, large squares to your hearts content. Not a lot of thinking, which is nice and speeds up the making of the blanket!

Strikket efter Pernille's opskrift i to tråde garn. Dels brun Arwetta Classic, dels Opal strømpegarn i farve gråand.

A pair of really thick, delicious socks for my nephew (the one with large feet and a dream of 5 pairs of socks) have finished. Made from Pernille's pattern in 2 threads of yarn. Brown Arwetta Classic and Opal sock yarn in a duck-color.
Really nice and warm. I used 145 grams of yarn and knit with needles size 4 mm. A very quick and comfortable way of making warm feet! Thank you, Pernille!

Hjertevarme / Heartfelt warmth
I went to the wedding on Saturday. Aaaaawwwww, they were so sweet and very much in love! So this Monday will stay in the romantic theme.
Even though it's still "summer", it might be a good idea getting prepared for colder weather. And what better way to show hot love than by wearing this two-at-once-mitten?

Sweater
My nephew (19) designed this sweater for himself, as his knitted thing this year. Or.... Something like this, at least. He likes math, wants to become an engineer and is really good at drawing. So he made this combination of formulas and good, old, Norwegian stars!
I've already bought the yarn (I'm really good at that!). Including the red string, that he suggested. I've been thinking hard - if making fair isle pattern, formulas on the front won't be enough.
So I was thinking little pictures symbolising him. He perfectly agreed when I told him. The symbols? We agreed on those too! (Our brains curl the same way, I guess.)
Now I just need to really think hard! I need charts. And a sample. And planning. And in the end I need to get started..... It will be quite a big work, but nice, I guess!

Bonus
Vældig nemt mønster, men vældig effektivt.
My friend in Germany had a beautiful little girl. I went into the basement and dig up a small girly bonus from the gift-box. A dress made from an old pattern. Terribly easy, but also terribly cute.
On monday I'll mail it with the vest, the blue cardigan and the apple-hat.
I hope, the little princess will enjoy.

Perleamok / Bead-craziness
In my local crafts-shop in the neighborhood mall, there is a sale. Beads on sale. Pretty, Chzeck glass-beads for a modest price of only 2 dollars a bag (that's 70% off). The bags with 650 beads seem to hold beads with a perfect size for knitting.
So - well - suddenly it went a little crazy.......

Especially when I realized that the Evenstar shawl (Ravelry-link) needs around 3000 beads, or 5 bags. It's quite a lot!
They had plenty of yellow beads, which will fit with both of these colors of (wollmeise) lace-yarn.
Sometime I'm going to knit it. When there are no more cold nephews and nieces, when the year is 2012 and I'm going to knit something for ME! All year...... (And then I'm also going to knit this. It's so cool! But when is ever the right occasion for wearing something this poisonous?)

Abstinenser / Withdrawal symptoms
For 2 entire days I didn't have a sock that could jump into my bag when going anywhere. No small knitwork that would fit in my backpack, and help me go through any empty periods during the day. (Oh dear - what if I got bored?)
It was really weird!
So I happened to start the next pair of socks..... And then I really need to think deep about what other "serious" projects and "serious" small stuff I can get started, that will also fit in a bag!

Strømpefamilien / The von Socks
Yet another pair of socks finished. This time for my brother-in-law, good old rib-pattern. Once more Wollmeise Twin, this time we're different color "Im Jahr der Ratte". Absolutely not a favorite color of mine. Blue-grey-like. Not a splash of color, but good for very conservative mens socks, and really quite rat-like..... I used 135 grams, and there is still 25 grams left of the "150" grams skein.
Hep!

Now the collection of socks for the San Francisco part of the family is complete. Dad-socks, Mum-socks, Bigbrother-socks and Littlesister-socks. (Youngest child-socks travelled with the family a while ago).
Before you turn to more interesting projects, please let me mention, that I actually succeeded in making 4 pairs of socks since July 9th. I'm actually very proud. Even if 75% were made with rib-pattern.
I'm almost ready to pack and go. The socks are ready, I bought birthday-presents for all (3) children and several kilo's of Danish candy when in Germany last week.
The next pair of socks? Well, I need to make a pair without the rib-pattern in August. But I'll use Pernille's pattern. Using 4 mm needles will make the biggest socks in no time. Wait and see!
